Rich history, extraordinary wealth of cultural heritage and amazing opportunities for enjoyment. The picturesque landscapes, the alternating rhythms between narrow stretches and wide expanses of vineyards and orchards have been fascinating visitors from all over the world. And continued to inspire thinkers and artists alike, making this region a preferred meeting point for connoisseurs and epicureans. The Nibelungenau begins at Ybbs/Persenbeug. This wide valley extends up to Melk. The Nibelungengau earned its name because the legend of the Nibelungenlied says that Rüdiger von Bechelaren (Pöchlarn) had settled here, as a feudatory of Attila the Hun. The Wachau, a wine growing area renowned throughout the world, begins just where the magnificent baroque Abbey Melk arises on the southern bank; it is also a pleasure garden, and one of the most beautiful river valleys. In 2000, the Wachau was declared part of the UNESCO World heritage. This unique work of art, in its entirety, extends up to the city of Krems 40 km downstream. The charming old town of Krems with its mediaeval alleyways and historical buildings lies at the heart of the Krems valley. Committed winegrowers around Krems, Senftenberg, Rohrenberg, Furth bei Göttweig and Gedersdorf have been cultivating grapes here for centuries in the primary and loessic soils, in particular the Green Veltliner variety. |
